You're lucky I got two of the three letters correct.

And if you want to cough up half a grand, great. I LOVE vBulletin.
With all the people willing to donate, I doubt it would take more than an hour to raise that much money. But what do I know?

    Re: Forum Software

pellmell, let me point out that this forum is now slightly less than three days old, and it was put up rather hastily in a desperate attempt to set up a temporary site for TMMO members to use while the TMMO forums were offline. No intention existed in my mind at all of making it a permanent place to post at the time I set it up, nor did I seek to make any kind of profit from it.

So I must say, having someone complain about what software was chosen, then get snarky about how much money I could raise to support satisfying said complainer rather rubs me the wrong way.

If you dislike the software so intensely, nothing requires you to use it.
If you're having trouble logging in or any other tech support issues, or if you have a question about the software, please post them in the Visitor's Corner.
If you need to reach me about something more private, please contact me via private message.

Reaching out to me privately may not result in a quick response. Posting in the Visitor's Corner ensures other staff members will see your post as well and may be able to help you more quickly.

Also, as far as I know, none of the staff here are psychics, so if you are reporting an issue, and want help, then please take the time to be as detailed as possible. The more effort you put into describing the problem, the more we'll put into solving it.

Is it no longer supported? That's disappointing, but not surprising. I remember when Jelsoft sold it. A sad day.

I wasn't being snarky, and I don't understand how you got that impression. Go back and read my comment again. The ability to raise money to support the forum is an enviable position.

I was offering my opinion as I have been on several forums that use this software. I don't dislike it so intensely and never said that.

Consider my forum software comments withdrawn. Maybe I'm the first casualty.

    Re: Forum Software

I see VBulletin mentioned as no longer supported. I am ignorant of forum software market, technology, etc but I wonder if at least some VBulletin is still supported.... because the most functional forum I use has VBulletin at the bottom.

One nice feature is that if you go to threads you have been in, with new replies, it takes you to the place in the thread where you were last reading.

I'm grateful Greebo started this forum, just throwing something out there that might help keep it alive for a long time. ?

    Re: Forum Software

Given recent experiences, I am completely in favor of having forum software which can be kept current and maybe even enhanced from time to time. I am further in favor of providing funding -- either through surplus in the regular donation channel or by a separate 'Building Fund' with its own channel -- to purchase (if necessary) and maintain whatever forum software The Powers That Be prefer.

SMF does have that. Click 'new' in the topic list by the topic name.

    Re: Forum Software

I've administered a few vBulletin sites, and so I'm very comfortable with it and familiar with how powerful it is.

However, the latest version of vBulletin comes with a hefty price tag. It's $250/year.

But people have been so generous, I'm seriously thinking about converting when the paypal setup is finalized.

    Lex might kill me though...

Dude, practically everybody on this site was paying at least a quarter of that to be on that other site with the antiquated software. I really think you should be able to have the software you like -- even that is terribly inadequate compensation for what you're doing for us.

So, if my math is correct, so far you need three people paying what they were paying before to cover the month-to-month operating expenses and now four more to cover the software. Seven people out of 500. Less than 1%.

If only 1% of this user base is supporting the site, something is horribly wrong.

But you still have to weigh all that against Lex firebombing your house. Does he know where you live?
